While packing my bookshelves, I came across a Her World magazine article from 2012 — a piece I had completely forgotten about.
I had been interviewed back then, during the time I was running my own consulting practice.
The article was titled something along the lines of:
"Should You Always Say Yes to Your Boss?"
It explored a workplace dilemma that many of us still face today:
Saying “yes” to added responsibilities,
“Yes” to weekend work,
“Yes” to lateral transfers,
“Yes” to projects well beyond your job scope.
At the time, I shared my view that saying yes — within reason — could be a path to growth, visibility, and discovering strengths we didn't yet know we had.
That was more than a decade ago.
As I reread the piece, it felt like a happy Friday find that turned into a thoughtful weekend read — and I wonder:
In today’s work culture — where boundary-setting, mental wellness, and quiet quitting are widely discussed — does this advice still hold?
Or would we see it through a different lens now?
It’s a reminder of how much the world of work (and our relationship with it) continues to evolve.
So, the question remains: How do we discern which “yes” truly matters?
